How to Size a Filter for Your Tank

Start with turnover, not the biggest pump on the shelf

Filter sizing starts with your tank’s real volume and bioload — not whichever pump looks the most powerful in the shop. For most community freshwater tanks, aim for roughly 4–6× turnover per hour through your filter media. Heavy stock, messy species, or marine systems often need 6–10×.

Canister vs HOB vs sponge

Under about 40 litres, a sponge filter or a small hang-on-back (HOB) unit is usually enough. From around 115 litres with normal stocking, a canister filter earns its place. Sumps make sense on large or marine systems.
